Leadership Knoxville Flagship Program

"Leadership Knoxville is a unique opportunity for personal and professional growth. Not only did I share the experience with a fascinating and diverse group of local leaders and learn about community issues from the inside, I also expanded my leadership skill set."
Doug Kirchhofer, President, Tennessee Smokies

Intense. Enjoyable. Challenging. Instructional.

These words are often heard during the 10-month Leadership Knoxville experience.

Marcel Proust once said, “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” New eyes, new knowledge, new understanding, new relationships, new zeal is the hoped-for outcome of the flagship program.

The curriculum provides a comprehensive learning experience through a combination of monthly sessions, experiential learning opportunities and team projects. Real community issues are used throughout the year to enhance participants’ understanding of their community while reinforcing the importance of 21st Century leadership skills and processes. Sessions are held in various locations to provide a broad geographic perspective. The year includes a two-day visit to Nashville to explore statewide issues and the impact of state government on local communities.

Participants are chosen from Knox and surrounding counties. Approximately 45 people are selected for the class each year, based on the nominee’s interest, demonstrated commitment to the greater Knoxville area, and leadership capabilities.

Past Leadership Knoxville classes have included current Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam, UT Women’s Head Basketball Coach Pat Summitt, TVA President/CEO Tom Kilgore, Knoxville’s Community Development Corporation President/CEO Alvin Nance, KUB President/CEO Mintha Roach, Clayton Homes President/CEO Kevin Clayton, and Hispanic Chamber executive Luis Velazquez.

Diversity is important to us and to the region’s growth. In addition to numerous business leaders, classes since the beginning have included 150 educators, nearly 50 physicians, over 100 government officials, close to 50 religious leaders, 100 nonprofit heads, 40 arts representatives and nearly 75 of the community’s most active volunteers.
